Maple syrup producers fined

Two maple syrup producers in Quebec's Eastern Townships have been fined for using a banned substance.

Two maple syrup producers in Quebec's Eastern Townships have been fined for using a banned substance.

Paraformaldehyde, or PFD, is used to disinfect tap-holes in trees. The product has been banned for a decade.

In the spring of 2001, federal inspectors found PFD in the trees of tienne Beauregard of Roxton Pond, and Jacques Fournier of Lac-Brome.

A fine of $4,000 has been imposed on each producer.

Producers are tempted to use PFD because they can tap their trees weeks ahead of harvest, and the tap-holes will stay open.
