They're not as well-known as Team Gushue, but an amateur Curling team from St. John's are new national curling champions.

Skip Andrew Symonds led Team Newfoundland and Labrador to capturethe Travelers Curling Club Championship on Saturday in Ottawa.

The event is considered the top amateur curling tournament in the country

Symonds, along with teammates Mark Healy, Corey Eward and Keith Jewer, said it's an honour to bring the trophy back to the rock.

"Just getting to wear the Newfoundland jacket first of all was special," Symonds said after the win.

"But to come up here and run through the week and actually win it is pretty amazing."

It's the first time a team from the province has brought home the winning trophy from the Travelers championship.

Newfoundland and Labrador beat Team Manitoba 6-4 in the final game.

Symonds said the response from back home has been overwhelming since the big win. There was even a screen at the Re/Max Curling Club where supporters were cheering them on back in St. John's

"I went to the locker room after we won and turned my phone back on and it was crazy, it was buzzing for 20 minutes straight," he said.

"I can't wait to get back, I'm sure there's a lot of smiley faces."

The team will now set it's sights towards the provincial tankard next year
