Twenty-three communities will be competing in 14 sporting activities at the 2016 Labrador Winter Games.

Bursey is a veteran of the Northern Games, which includes multiple races.

She is an avid runner, goes to the gym 2-3 times a week and practices in the recreation centre and schools in her community.

"Our coach is always pushing us," Bursey said. "I have a couple of special people coming along to watch me. My six-year-old daughter practices along with me it's a surprise for her, she doesn't know she's coming to the games."

Bursey will be challenging the current record for the Northern Games.

Cameron Andersen

Andersen is on Team Makkovik. He is originally from there, but now lives in Conception Bay South. He's 38 years old, and 5'11".

Events: Target shooting, volleyball, and the Northern Games.

Andersen has not competed in the games in 16 years. Since then his record for the Northern Games has been tied but not beaten.

He has been training since a Christmas visit home, when he tried out and landed a spot on the team.

"It's going to be different this year," Andersen said. "The camaraderie of it again everyone knows someone from every community. [I am] looking forward to seeing people I haven't seen in a while again."

Alf Parsons

Parsons, who is on Team Labrador City, is 65 years old and 5'6".

Events: Target shooting, cross-country skiing, snowshoe biathlon and the northern duathlon (skiing and snowshoeing).

He has only ever missed one year of the Labrador Winter Games since its inception in 1983; six years ago, he was at a national cross-country tournament in Corner Brook during the same week as the Labrador Winter Games.

"Skiing is my event," said Parsons.

Parsons has held many records over the years and is considered the most decorated athlete of the games.

Trent Pottle

Pottle is on Team Makkovik. He is 31 years old, and is 5'8".

Events: Badminton, and volleyball.

He practices a few times a week in the local gymnasium and when he gets time while working in Voisey's Bay. He's been playing badminton since junior high school.

"Badminton is my sport," Pottle said. "Tryouts were during Christmas holidays. I made the team in December ...I keep myself in decent shape throughout the year. We have stiff competition in Makkovik. We have a great badminton team there."

Pottle has competed in six Labrador Winter Games, and has won 13 medals in total for badminton and volleyball.

Barry Dyson

Dyson is on Team Cartwright. He's 48 years old, and is 5'10".

He has been to more Labrador Winter Games than not over the years, having only missed a few. Dysondidn't have much time to practice this year. Just this past week, he competed in the Cain's Quest 3,500-kilometre snowmobile race across Labrador terrain.

"If I didn't know how to do the things I got to do, I shouldn't be here,"Dyson said.

This is his sixth time competing in the Labrathon, and he said it's likely his last. Dyson has set records in the past and has four gold medals and one bronze in the last five Labrathons, as well as a gold in ball hockey and a silver in the snowmobile race.
