Vancouver police are looking for a suspect in an attempted home invasion that sent an elderly woman to hospital on Thursday night.

The 86-year-old woman was entering her home in the Oakridge neighbourhood around 10 p.m. PT when she was approached from behind.

A man tried to force his way inside, according to police, and the woman's hand was broken in the struggle.

The house alarm caused the suspect to flee, and officers, including a K-9 unit searched the area, but weren't able to locate the man.

The suspect is described as:

  • White.
  • 5'6" to 5'11" tall.
  • 35 to 45 years old.
  • Balding.
  • Possible brown hair and stubble.

The woman was taken to hospital to have her hand treated and then released.

Police can't link this incident to recent attacks on women in the same area, but aren't ruling anything out. Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1.
