Meaghan Benfeito, Roseline Filion win silver at World Series diving event

Canada won a silver and two bronze in synchro diving at a FINA World Series event in Windsor, Ont. Friday.

The duo of Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion took silver in the women's 10-metre platform, finishing behind Chinese pair of Ruolin Chen and Huixia Liu. The Canadians had a score of 313.71 points, 34.89 behind China's winning total of 348.60 over five dives. Great Britain (310.68) took the bronze.

"We had a very solid first three dives," said Filion. "Our fourth dive was not as good. I completely missed the entry, but our synchro today was good. We proved to everybody that no matter how many ups and downs we go through, we'll still come out strong and be on the podium. It shows we are still a strong team going into the Olympics."

The pair, previously ranked third overall in the World Series after a silver in Dubai earlier this year, move into a tie for silver with Great Britain at 66 points apiece with a final competition remaining in Kazan, Russia, next week.

In the women's three-metre springboard, Canadians Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel won bronze with a score of 312.87 for five dives, with China (339.90) taking gold and Italy (313.44)silver.

"Our goal this week was to get our first two dives, our compulsories, closer to the first-place score, which is what we did," Ware said. "We had 102 points, which is our record for our first two dives. We're really happy about that."

Canada also won bronze in the men's event, as PhilippeGagneandFrancoisImbeau-Dulacfinished behind gold-medallists China and Ukraine.GagneandImbeau-Bulachad a total score of 414.36 for their six dives, behind China's winning score of 450.69. Ukraine scored 426.42.

The event continues Saturday with the women's 10-metre platform final, men's three-metre springboard final and the mixed 10-metre synchro. It will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca, beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
