4 new councillors elected to Regina city hall

City hall will soon see four new councillors walking through its doors, with another six incumbents set to return.

Ward 3:Cathedral and downtown

The departure of well-supported former Coun. Shawn Fraser in Ward 3 saw an opening that was overwhelmingly snatched up by Andrew Stevens.

The University of Regina assistant business professor secured 65 per cent of the vote, coming in leagues ahead of the other four candidates.

The next closest in the race was Regina Chamber of Commerce member relations manager Amanda Baker with 15 per cent.

In his campaign, Stevens promised to encourage civic engagement and address issues like homelessness and racism, as well as implement renewable energy strategies.

Ward 4: Arcola East

Incumbent Coun. Bryon Burnett was unseated on election night in a tight race against newcomer Lori Bresciani.

Bresciani won the ward with 40 per cent or 2,067 votes. Burnett was a close second, losing by just 59 votes.

Bresciani has worked in government, business and has volunteered in the community.

She campaigned on a platform of safety, transparency and promised to be fiscally responsible.

Burnett served just one term on city council. Before that he was a senior advisor in the Ministry of the Economy.

Ward 6: North Central and Core

The councillor position for the ward that includes the city's North Central neighbourhood will stay in the family.

It was a heavily split race with nine candidates vying for the job, but in the end Joel Murray narrowly coming out on top with 27 per cent of voters choosing him.

Murray is the son of the previous Ward 6 Coun. Wade Murray.

Joel Murray grew up in the neighbourhood and now owns a construction company in Eastview.

His father served four terms on council representing Ward 6. He announced in July that he wouldn't be seeking re-election, and instead threw his support behind his son.

Joel Murray said he couldn't have done it without his father's support.

"He was my campaign manager from day one," Murray said.

Moving forward, Murray said he plans to focus on safer communities and developing an anti-gang strategy that utilizes community outreach programs and the Regina Police Service.

Ward 9: North west

Jason Mancinelli is the new councillor for Ward 9, which was held for years by long-time councillorTerry Hincks before his sudden death on Oct. 14 this year.

Mancinelli got 54 per cent of the vote, with Aidan Wotherspoon coming in second with 40 per cent.

Just under 200 people voted for Hincks, whose named remained on the ballot.

Hincks died at the Pasqua Hospital on the evening of Oct. 14 after years of battling cancer.
