The CBC has opened a new radio station in Kamloops, B.C. -- the first new radio station the corporation has launched in 14 years.

On Tuesday morning, the bureau launched its new show Kamloops Daybreak with host Shelley Joyce and website, cbc.ca/kamloops. It takes over from the Kelowna-based show Daybreak South for listeners in the Thompson-Nicola, parts of the Fraser Valley, southern Cariboo, and Revelstoke.

"This is the moment we've been waiting for," said Johnny Michel, managing director of CBC British Columbia.

"The team has been busy working for the last few months to put together a morning show that reflects the issues and stories that make Kamloops the vibrant and thriving city that it is."

The CBC last opened a bureau in Victoria in Sept. 1998. The new station is part of the CBC's 2015 commitment "Everyone, Every way," which promises to be more Canadian, more regional and more digital.

Kamloops bureau hosts open house

The station is holding an open house at 218 Victoria St. in Kamloops during a live broadcast of the show from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT Tuesday, with special guests, musicians and CBC celebrities.

Vernon singer-songwriter Andrew Allen and Tiller`s Folley of Surrey, B.C., will perform.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT the public will also have a chance to meet Bob McDonald, host of CBC Radio One's Quirks & Quarks, B.C. Almanac host Mark Forsythe, and Graham Wardle, star of CBC television's Heartland.

The open house kicks off a week of special CBC activities in Kamloops to celebrate the bureau's opening.

North by Northwest host Sheryl MacKay will do a live broadcast at the Art We Are Caf at 246 Victoria St. with guests Barney Bentall, Dustin Bentall and multi-instrumentalist Eric Reed from 6 to 9 a.m. PT on Oct. 13.

On Oct. 16, there will be a live concert recording for CBC Radio One's jazz show Hot Air with host Margaret Gallagher at The Parkside Lounge at the Interior Savings Centre, on 300 Lorne St. in Kamloops.
