Nurse practitioners given more duties

Nurse practitioners in B.C. have been given more duties (CBC).

Our health care system need to change. This much we know.

On yesterday's show we heard all about the doctor's shortage in Kamloops and all of B.C. Health Minister Margaret McDiarmid said during an interview on the show yesterday that nurse practitioners would be part of the solution.

Shortly after our interview, the provincial government announced that nurse practitioners will be able to now admit and discharge patients from hospitals.

It's a big step for nurse practitioners, who have only been allowed to practice in B.C. for seven years.

Denise Tarlier is a nurse practitioner, and also teaches at the nursing school at Thompson Rivers University. Host Shelley Joyce spoke with her about the news.
