It was1980, and the squid were back in Bonavista Bay.  They'd struck big the year before as well, and the price for the strange looking creatures had been good.  In fact, in 1979, many local fisherman had done better with squid than lobsters.

But in 1980, even though the squid were still plentiful, the price was down.  Dramatically.  It had dropped by half.

Still, fishermen and their families were fishing squid feverishly.  Most of the catches were sold to the plant fresh. The rest were dried, on clotheslines and in old houses. It was a bay gone squid crazy, and Dave Quinton was there to document it.
