One Hour a Day

According to the new Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines kids need 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day.

Here are some ways to get started:

Make Body Shapes - upside down and right-side up. Pretend to slither like a snake, and roll like a rolling pin on the floor, or down a small grassy slope.

Practice Throwing - encourage your child to throw a soft object, that he or she can hold easily in one hand, at a target. Try both the left and right hand, throwing softly and as hard as he or she can.

Practice Balance
- stand on one foot and then try the other. Start with eyes open, and then close them. Try walking along any painted lines on the ground.

Practice Jumping - see how high your child can jump, or how far. Try it on one foot. Make shapes in the air. Make imaginary "rivers" and get your child to jump from one bank to the other. Make sure your child bends at the knees when they land.

Get Swimming - introduce children to water activities and learn to swim programs.

Try Skating - get your children out on the ice or snow so that they learn to slide.

Ride a Bike - with or without training wheels to develop dynamic balance.
