First Nations group takes Conservatives' education plan to court

The Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is requesting a judicial review of the Conservative government's reworked plan for aboriginal education.

The Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labradoris requesting a judicial review of the Conservative government'sreworked plan for aboriginal education.

The group is asking the Federal Court to prevent the legislationfrom going ahead without its endorsement.

The assembly's chief, Ghislain Picard, and Kitigan Zibi ChiefGilbert Whiteduck are scheduled to hold a news conference tomorrowin Montreal.

A spokeswoman for the group declined to provide a copy of thejudicial review request before the news conference.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently unveiled his government'splan to reform First Nations education, which was retooled after itran into opposition from aboriginals that threatened to derail thereform process.

The Assembly of First Nations had called on the government toensure aboriginal communities retain control of education and toprovide a statutory funding guarantee, recognition of First Nationslanguages and culture, shared oversight and ongoing, meaningful engagement.
