Carly Rae Jepsen named Billboard Rising Star

Bubbly Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen has been named Billboard's Rising Star of the Year following the international success of her hit Call Me Maybe.

The Rising Star honour acknowledges the Mission, B.C., singer-songwriter's breakout year, during which she moved to the centre of the pop world after years as a folk-tinged indie artist.

"As a singer-songwriter having grown up listening to and being influenced by countless female artists, I am truly honoured to be recognized by Billboard with this award," Jepsen said in a statement.

"I hope to inspire others through my music the way those artists have inspired me."

Jepsen and Katy Perry, previously designated Billboards Woman of the Year, will be honoured at the Billboard Women in Music event on Nov. 30 in New York.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber gave Jepsen nominated for the 2010 Juno Award for best new artist a boost on her way to fame when he raved about Call Me Maybe on Twitter.

The catchy hit was declared theBillboard song of the summerand widely covered, including aversion by Cookie Monster. It sold more than 10 million singles worldwide.

Jepson's new album, Kiss, was released by Bieber manager Scooter Braun's Schoolboy Records and Interscope Records.

Previous Rising Star winners include Nicki Minaj (2011), Jazmine Sullivan (2010) and Lady Gaga (2009).
