Resident Evil: Retribution wins Golden Reel Award

Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth instalment of the zombie action film franchise, has earned the Golden Reel Award as the top box office earner of 2012 in Canada.

Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth instalment of the Resident Evil zombie action film franchise, has earned the Golden Reel Award as the top box office earner of 2012 in Canada.

The Academy of Canadian Cinemaand Television says the horror-action film grossed more than $5.4 million in Canada, well ahead of any other Canadian-produced film.

The Cineplex Golden Reel Award is presented annually to the Canadian film that earns the highest domestic box office.

Resident Evil: Retribution, in which Milla Jovovich reprises her role as a hardened heroine battling the evil Umbrella Corp. and waves of zombies, took in about $250 million worldwide.

Earlier instalments Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) also won Golden Reel Awards.

This marks the seventh time Canadian producer Don Carmody has won the Golden Reel for one of his movies, according to the academy. Aside from the Resident Evil franchise, he's alsoearned the box office crown for the moviesMeatballs, Porkys, Johnny Mnemonic and The Art of War.

Last year's winner was the French-language comedy Starbuck, which isbeing remade into a Hollywood film starring Vince Vaughn.

The 2012 award will be presented as part of theCanadian Screen Awardsgala on March 3.
