GM recalling 2 million vehicles

General Motors is recalling more than 2M vehicles, including 1.5M SUVs and pickup trucks with problems with seatbelt design.

General Motors is recalling more than 2 million vehicles, including 1.5 million SUVs and pickup trucks with problems with seatbelt design, the company said Monday.

The automaker is recalling the 2003 to 2005 model year Silverado Crew Cab, Suburban, Tahoe, Avalanche, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon XL, Yukon and the Hummer H2.

A GM spokesperson said the centre seat belt in the second row of seats in the SUVs and trucks can ride up on a passenger's stomach or abdomen, resulting in reduced protection.

The spokesperson said the problem has not resulted in any injuries.

GM said the problem will be fixed free of charge. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks.

The big recall was one of six announced Monday. Other recalls include 330,000 1500 Series Chevrolet Suburban and Yukon XL from 2000-01 for a potential problem with fuel pump wires overheating leading to engine stalling.

At least 97,000 of the 2 million vehicles being recalled are in Canada, a GM Canada spokesperson said.

GM shares rose a penny to end at $26.75 US on the NYSE.
