RIM disputes report of India BlackBerry deal

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Inc. disputes a report saying the company has offered to install a "network data analysis system" in India to allow government security agencies to intercept decoded messages.

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Inc. disputesa report in the Economic Times of India Thursday that says the company has offered to install a "network data analysis system" at its location in India to allow government security agencies to intercept decoded messages.

The report, based on an internal note from the government's Home Ministry, was quicklydenied by Waterloo, Ont.-based RIM, which calledit "false and technologically infeasible."

RIM says the so-called network data analysis system being talked aboutis a tool required to allow carriers in India to provide lawful access to the Canadian company's devices. RIM sends emails and instant messages through one of several servers it has globally where data gets encrypted for business users. Consumers have a lower level of security.

RIM says this type of lawful access is also required by the Indian government for consumer services provided by RIM's competitors in that country.

The company also disputes claims it's been given a deadline of Jan. 31, 2011 to come up with a solution to the impasse with the Indian government, or risk facing a ban in the country.
