3 pedestrians struck and killed in Lower Mainland in 30-hour period

The fatal collisions happened in Delta, Abbotsford and Burnaby on Wednesday and Thursday.

Three pedestrians were struck and killed in the Lower Mainland within a 30-hour period Wednesday and Thursday.

A man in his 30s was killed Thursday evening at the intersection ofLadner Trunk Roadand Harvest Drive. A Delta police statement said the man was walking east with another person in the 5800 block of Ladner Trunk Road when he turned to walk south across the street.

"Unfortunately it appears he tripped on the median, and fell into the path of eastbound traffic. He was then struck by a vehicle,"Insp.Ryan Hall wrote in the statement.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and is co-operating with the investigation. The road was shut down after the collisionbut has since reopened.

Footage from the scene showed a covered body in the middle of the road with a lone shoe nearby. A taxi appearedto have been involved and was parked near the police tape.

Police in Abbotsford are also investigating the death of a pedestrian following an early-morning crash involving a pickup truck in the Clearbrook area on Thursday. The driver remained at the scene.

A woman, who police believe to be in her 40s, was transported to hospital where she died of her injuries.

The third victim, an 88-year-old woman, wasstruckWednesday afternoon in Burnaby at the intersection of Willingdon Avenueand Beresford Street.She died in hospital, police confirmedThursday.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.

Burnaby RCMP are investigating after an elderly woman was struck in a crosswalk on Wednesday. The driver remained at the scene. (Shane MacKichan)
