Theft suspect shot by police in Abbotsford, B.C.

A suspect has been shot by police and an officer is injured after an alleged theft at a Cabela's outdoor recreation store in Abbotsford, B.C.

A suspect has been shot by police and an officer is injured after an alleged theft at a Cabela's outdoor recreation store in Abbotsford, B.C.

According to B.C. Emergency Health Services, one of the injured people has been airlifted to hospital in critical condition while the other was taken by ambulance in serious condition.

Abbotsford police say they were called to the store in theMcCallum Junction shopping centre at 3:16 p.m. on Friday to deal with a theft in progress.

An officer confronted two suspects leaving the store, and police allege that one suspect used pepper spray on them as both ran away.

Police allege that the suspect with the pepper spray then returned, sprayed the officer again and then assaulted the officer.

"At this point the officer discharged their firearm striking the suspect," an Abbotsford Police Department press release says.

Video taken by a bystander shows a man lying on the pavement outside the Cabela's,dragging himself on the ground as a police officer points agun at him. One person standing nearby throws something at the man on the ground.

Other officers eventually arrive, surround the man with guns drawn, yell at himand shoot him with some kind of projectile.

The second suspect was taken into custody without incident and the Independent Investigations Office is investigating the shooting.
