Air fresheners lead to cocaine stash

Thirteen air fresheners in the cab of a semi truck tipped authorities that the driver was attempting to mask a smell as he drove across the U.S. border south of Vancouver into Canada, police say.

Canada Border Services Agency officers searched the vehicle's cab at the Pacific Border Crossing Nov. 23 and found 37 kilograms of cocaine stuffed in a duffle bag, RCMP said in a release Wednesday.

The nameof the44-year-old Surrey, B.C.,driver is not being released until he is formally charged.

Cocaine is not normally hidden in the cab of a commercial vehicle because the acetone used in processing the drug has a distinct, acrid odour, so the presence of so many air fresheners immediately aroused suspicions, police said.

The RCMP hasn't establishedthe source of the cocaine, butthey believe an organized crime group is responsible, the release said.
