2 girls arrested after video shows attack on another student at school in Mission

Two teenage girls have been arrested in connection with a violent incident caught on video in a schoolyard in Mission, B.C..

The video was taken atcole Heritage Park Middle School on Monday around lunchtime, and has been shared on social media. It shows two female students pushing and kicking another student, shoving them to the ground. The girlscontinue to hit and kick the other student, who tries to protect themselvesfrom the blows.

RCMP said the student who was attacked was 14 years old. The two female students are believed to be around the same age.

A statement Friday said police opened an investigation after the student who was attacked wentto the station with their mother to file a complaint. After an investigation, which included the video posted to social media, police have recommended charges for both alleged attackers: one for assault and the other for uttering threats.

Video taken at cole Heritage Park Middle School on Jan. 11 shows teenage girls hitting and kicking another student.

The statement said the teenagerswere arrested "without incident" and later released pending court appearances in Abbotsford, B.C., in March.

Mission School District superintendentAngus Wilson told CBC News the girlswill also face discipline from the school, but Wilson said he could not provide details about the specific measures.

"They're about the most severe consequences a school or school district can provide," he said.

Wilson added that there will also be consequences for some bystanders during the attack.

"Bullying is an ongoing problem in schools in Mission and around the province," he said.

In a statement shared online, the district's school boardsaid it was "appalled" by the assault.

"We take this incident very seriously," the statement said. "The school district does not tolerate bullying, harassment, orviolence, and willfollow our protocols to deal with the serious situation."

Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside tweeted Thursday that she has "directed the Ministry to provide all supports necessary to the school district, students and staff. Police are appropriately investigating and we are co-operating fully."
