Coronation Street sets stage for surprise engagement

British soap opera Coronation Street holds a special place in many hearts.

Now a Victoria couple has written the show into their real life love story by getting engaged on the show's set in Manchester, England.

Kira Lavoie became a fan of the show somewhat accidentally 16 years ago.

"I actually was flicking through channels when I found it, and started watching it and got addicted to it right away," she said.

"I reallygot drawn into it."

When she started dating Jose Bingham, he fell into the show with her. The two had talked about visiting the CoronationStreet set. But when Bingham realized tours of the original set were going to stop at the end of 2015, he started planning.

"I just had to find a way to get her this tour," he said.

"It's definitely a bucket list item and I would do anything to make her happy."

Making it work

The trip became a birthday present for Lavoie's 44th birthday. And then, secretly, it became an engagement trip.

It was no small task to get tickets for the tour, said Bingham. But after several phone calls one which involvedpleading with an agent at Ticketmasterhe got two tickets.

Not long after that thecouple was roaming the set. Bingham kept trying to steer Lavoie towards the Rovers Return pub.

"We finally get there and he takes a picture of me in front of it. And I said okay, 'Now I'll take a picture of you.' And he's all of a sudden bending down, and I thought he was getting something out of the bag," she said.

"And I'm getting worried because there's other people trying to take a picture of themselves in front of the Rovers Return. And all a sudden he's on one knee and starts into a speech that right now I can't tell you what he said because I was so shocked."

But Bingham himself does remember what he said, and more importantly, her reply.

"I just let her know that from the moment I met her, I knew that she was very, very special, and how much I love her and I'd like to spend the rest of my life with her. And will you marry me."

She said yes.
