Cyclist dead after collision in Surrey

Police say a man has died after he was hit by a motorist while riding a bicycle Thursday night in Surrey, B.C.

A man has died after he was hit by a motorist and thrown from hisbicycle, Thursday night in Surrey, B.C., according to Surrey RCMP.

The crash happened just after 10 p.m. on 108 Avenue at142 Street.

A neighbour, who declined to give her name, said she went outside after a car alarm began sounding on 108 Avenue.

She found a man lying on the road about 30 metres from the intersection where the cyclist is believed to have been struck.

A seriously damaged bicycle could be seen a distance down the road. A Ford Escape with a smashed windshield and major damage to its front end could be seen a little further down 108 Avenue.

The neighbour saidthe cyclist was unresponsivewith his eyes open when she began administering first aid.

Paramedics with the B.C. Ambulance Service arrived and triedto resuscitate the man. He was taken to hospital, but couldn't be saved, according to Surrey RCMP.

Police saidthe driver of the Ford Escape, a Surrey resident, is cooperating with their investigation.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be contributingfactors in the crash, though it's unclear if speed was involved, according to RCMP.

Police said the cyclist was not wearing a helmet, and didn't have lights when he attempted to cross 108 Avenue at 142 Street.

Police didn't immediately know the identity of the cyclist.

The RCMPIntegrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the Surrey RCMPCriminal Collision Investigation Team are investigating the crash.
