Fatal shooting in Surrey tied to gang activity, police say

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating after a man was shot and killed in Surrey, B.C., early Wednesday.

Investigators say Gary Kang, 24,was shot several times at his home near 161 Street and 30 Avenue in the city's Morgan Heights neighbourhood at around 5 a.m. PT.

Kang was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The man was known to police and his death is believed to have been targeted andlinked to the "ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict," IHIT said in a media release.

It is believed more than one suspect was involved in the shooting, and IHIT is now working with Surrey and Langley RCMP, as well as the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence.

RCMP were also called to a car fire near 229 Street and 78A Avenue Wednesday morning.

Investigators are working to determine whether this could belinked.

Anyone who may have dash camera footage and was driving around the Morgan Heights area in Surrey or in Langley around 232 Street and Highway 1 between 5 a.m. and 5:40 a.m. Wednesday is asked to contact IHIT.

"It is too early to offer a motive behind this morning's shooting,"Sgt. Frank Jangsaid in a media release.

"But given what we know of Kang's history with gang activity, we will be engaging with our gang enforcement partners."
