Kelowna bus stabbing: man charged with 2nd-degree murder

Acharge of second-degree murder has been laid against a suspect arrested Friday after a man was fatally stabbed in the neck in an apparent random attack on a busy bus Thursday evening.

Kelowna RCMP say he is due to appear in court on Monday.

Police announced the arrest of the man around 7 p.m. PT Friday after tellinga news conference they knew who they were looking for and expected to arrest him shortly.

The fatal attack occurredaround 6:30 p.m. PT Thursday when the bus with about 20 people aboard stopped at a bus stop on Baron Road behind the Dilworth shopping centre.

Witnesses told police one man in his 20s stabbed another in his 50s in the neck.

Others on the bus tried to save the victim by compressing the wound with clothing, but were unable to stop the bleeding.

Contrary to initial reports, RCMP say the man died at the scene and not in hospital.

Police saidtheir preliminary investigation suggesteda random incident.

"We know that crimes of this nature are always disturbing to the community,"saidRomanchuk.

RCMP cordoned off the area and called in a police dog but were unable to find the attacker at that time.

He's scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, Nov. 3.

Police say they are not releasing his name until then.
