Man rescued after crawling out of Lynn Canyon ravine

A 50-year-old man is recovering from hypothermia after falling down a ravine in Lynn Canyon on Wednesday, spending the night outdoors, then crawling his way out to meet rescue crews on Thursday.

Fire crews attended the area in the Seymour Demonstration Forest, near Capilano University, on Vancouver's North Shore at 8:20 a.m. PT on Thursday, said Assistant Chief Jim Bonneville.

"A woman was walking her dog this morning along the trail and ran into this man who had actually crawled his way up the ravine," said Bonneville.

"The man was actually on the edge of the trail waiting for [rescue crews]...He was wandering in the bush all night."

He said the man suffered no life-threatening injuries, but was loaded onto a stretcher after showing signs of hypothermia. His identity has not been released.

Bonneville also warned hikers to take precautions when heading out into the forest.

"It's important to, if you're out hiking around in the trails, to let people know where you are going and when you're returning, wear appropriate clothing and prepare for the worst if possible travel with somebody else."
