Mario Gutierrez 3rd at the Preakness Stakes while Vancouverites cheer him on

Former Vancouver jockey Mario Gutierrez came in third at the 141st Preakness Stakes, losing to winner Exaggerator and dashing hopes for a Triple Crown with mount Nyquist.

Former Vancouver jockey Mario Gutierrezcame in thirdat the 141st PreaknessStakes, losing to first place winner Exaggerator and Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux.

The Canadian-owned horse was favoured to win after finshing first inall of hiseight races, including the 2016 Kentucky Derby, which set him up for a shot at winning theTriple Crown.

Despite being defeated Vancouverites watched and cheered on Gutierrez.

Two horses dead

Steady rain pelted the Pimilco Race course in Baltimore late Saturday afternoon and the race wasn't without tragedy.

Two horses died within the first four races.

Homeboykris, a nine-year-old,collapsed after winning the day's first race andPramedya, a four-year-old was euthanized after fracturing a bone in her front leg.

Pramedya's jockey, Daniel Centeno was thrown off the horse and broke his collarbone.
