Midwife jailed for contempt of court

Controversial midwife Gloria Lemay has been sentenced to a five-month jail sentence for ignoring an earlier court order that she stop taking part in home births.

The 54-year-old Lemay will also be on probation for 12 months once she's released.

Lemay has refused to join the B.C. College of Midwives, and as a result was practicing outside the law.

However, she attended at least 10 home births after being ordered to stop by the courts, and took part in another delivery since her contempt conviction back in January.

At one point in the proceedings, Lemay was described as incorrigible. She says she was flattered.

"I hope I am incorrigible," she says. "I hope that until the day I die I fight for women's freedom that they can have who they want in their own bedroom to help them give birth to their baby."

When Lemay gets out of jail she hopes to get her certification through a new Midwives College in Manitoba, and then return to B.C. to resume her practice.
