More cameras at UBC campus after sex assaults - report

An interim report released by UBC recommends the installation of cameras at the Vancouver campus to address safety concerns after six sexual assaults last year.

Interim report also recommends developing a mobile phone app and more lighting

An interim report released by the University of B.C.recommends the installation of cameras at the Vancouver campus to
address safety concerns after six sexual assaults last year.

The report says the university will hold public forums and seekcommunity input over the expansion of electronic surveillance at keypoints including transit hubs.

As part of the process, the university will develop a policyabout privacy considerations.Recommendations to improve safety for students, staff and facultyalso include the development of a mobile phone app and morelighting.

The community is invited to provide feedback on therecommendations until Feb. 25, via a form on the reportwebsite, entitledImproving Campus Safety.

Six sexual assaults took place on theUBCcampus between April andOctober 2013, but the lone male suspect described in each case hasnot been apprehended.

The suspect is described asa Caucasian male, with dark or olive skin, in his late20sto early30s. He is slim in build and is between 5-8and 6-2.
