More dirty surgical tools at Kamloops hospital

More dirty surgical instruments have been discovered at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops by a surgeonwho spotted bone cement in an instrument pan.

When the latest case came to light Lana Mairs surgery was abruptly cancelled, according to her husband Glen Mairs.

"How do I feel about it? I'm pissed right off about it, because you know they have had this internal review going on for some time now and yet it just continues to go on," he said.

Despite the problems, Glen Mairs praises the hospital staff for his wife's care and said her surgery went ahead after a six hour delay.

Earlier this year, similar problems at the hospital resulted in the cancellation of over 200 surgeries, forcing the the Interior Health Authority to hire an external reviewer to examine hospital procedures.

Theproblem was blamed on staff training and the hospital's agingautoclaves - some are more than 15 years old - and the whole sterilization department is due for an overhaul.

In June, then-health minister Kevin Falcon promised funding for a new central sterilization department for Royal Inland, and construction was expected to get underway by the end of the year.
