North Shore Rescue called to Cypress by teen prankster

North Shore Rescue was called to Cypress mountain for two rescue operations Monday night, one of which turned out to be a hoax.

North Shore Rescue, its headquarters pictured above, was called to Cypress mountain to search for an out-of-bounds snowboarder Monday night, when the received a second hoax call.

North Shore Rescue was called to Cypress mountain for two rescue operations Monday night, one of which turned out to be a hoax.

West Vancouver police say search and rescue crews were already searching for an out-of-bounds snowboarder when they received a call about a second missing snowboarder.

Police say it took two hours to track the second 9-1-1 call toa teenager from North Vancouver, who told officerssomeone used his phone when he was not looking to make the prank call.

Constable Jeff Palmer says police, as well as the volunteer search and rescue team, are not happy.

"You know, think these things throughwhere you are not putting anyone's life [in danger], whether it's paid or volunteer emergencyresponder[s]. You know, 9-1-1 is for emergencies. It'snot for horsing around," says Palmer.

Palmer says police have spoken with the teen's parents and no charges are being considered at this time.

The out-of-bounds snowboarder managed to find a service roadand walk out of the woods himself.
