Police shooting victim had been deported to U.S.

A man shot and killed by a Mountie near McLeese Lake, B.C., on Sunday was an American who immigration officials had ordered to leave Canada in February, the RCMP say.

Staff Sgt. Grant Martin said 43-year-old Donald Dwayne Lewis was known to police. He did not say where Lewis is from.

Police had received a tip about a suspicious camper near McLeese Lake, about 200 kilometres south of Prince George.

Martin says a rookie officer approached Lewis, there was a violent struggleand Lewis was shot.

The officer is off work recovering from head injuries and a broken hand.

Delta police are heading the investigation into the shooting death. That investigation will include Lewis's reasons for being in Canada and when he re-entered the country.
