The RCMP's homicide team is investigating after a woman was shot and killed while drivingin the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey, B.C., early Thursday.

Surrey RCMP officers were called to an alleyway in the 13700-block of 75A Avenue just after 5:30 a.m. PT, after someone called about a vehicle that had crashed. An initialstatement from the detachment said officers found a 30-year-oldwoman sitting in the driver's seat with apparent gunshot wounds.

She died at the scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit (IHIT) has taken over the case.

At a mid-morning news conference, IHITSgt. Frank Jang said investigators werestill trying to identify the woman, as she did not own the vehicle she had beendriving. Jang said the woman was in her 30s,but the vehicle is registered to a woman in her late 20s.

Jangsaid the killingis not believed to be random, based on what investigatorssaw "at the scene" andon"previous investigations that are similar in nature."

He said a possible motive could become clearer once the woman is identified.

Jang said officers spoke with people in the neighbourhood after the woman died and, based on that work, police now believe a second vehicle was involved in the shooting.

No one else was in the car with the woman when she was found.

Police are searching for security and dashcam footage as part of their investigation. Anybody living in the area with surveillance cameras is asked to check their recordings.

Those with information is asked to call IHITat 18775514448or, to remain anonymous,Crime Stoppersat 1800222-8477.
