The Vancouver School Board has stepped up security to protect schools from Halloween-related vandalism, which last year caused about $50,000 damage.

Last October 31, Henderson Annex, in southeast Vancouver, fireworks were shot through a window, starting a fire.

Three other schools were also hit by arson, while 23 others also sustained damage, such as broken windows.

Authorities suspect vandals got an early start this year when fireworks had a part in starting a fire at Eric Hamber Secondary School Friday.

The school board isn't taking any chances Monday night.

"We've had patrols out at some historical bad spots. Tonight, 10 patrols [and] stationary guards at bad spots," said Bill Ostrum, the Vancouver Boards operations manager.

Extra fire crews will also be patrolling community centres, parks and schools, said Capt. Gabe Roder of the Vancouver Fire Dept.

"I don't think anybody goes out with intent of doing something malicious to the point where theyre going to destroy a school," said Roder. "I don't think they realize how much damage, how much heat these fireworks hold."
