Heavy rain soaks South Coast after record-dry summer

After a record-dry summer, the South Coast of B.C. is getting a soaking from a very wet weather system pushing across the region on Thursday.

After a record-dry summer, the South Coast of B.C. is getting a soakingfrom a very wet weather system pushing across the region on Thursday.

As much as 50 mm is expected to fall across the region by Friday, with as much as70 mm of rainnear Vancouver's North Shore and in southern sections of the Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound.

Rain will begin easing from the west over Vancouver Island this evening and is expected to stop just in time for the weekend.

Isolated thunderstorms are also expected in West Kootenay, East Kootenay, Kootenay Lake and the Elk Valley.

The rain comes after aprecipitation-free July for Vancouver and Victoria. It was the first time Vancouver has been precipitation-free for a full calendar month since 1937, when tracking began on rainfall statistics.
