Police say a man posed as a parent and attempted to lure a five-year-old girl from her daycare in East Vancouver last month.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) saidin a statement the alleged luring happened at an after-school home daycare near the intersection of Hastings Streetand Skeena Streeton Dec. 13.

Around 3:30 p.m. PT that day, police say, a man knocked on the door of the daycare and asked for the five-year-old girl by name, claiming to be her father.

The girl was out of the house with daycare staff at the time, according to police, who said the man then left after making a comment "about calling the nanny." After talking to the girl's parents about the encounter, staff immediately reported the man to police, the statement said.

"We've confirmed that neither of the girl's parents had come to pick her up that afternoon, and that nobody else should have been aware of the child-care arrangement," said VPD Sgt. Steve Addison in thestatement.

He said the man's identity "is still a mystery," despite police investigating the case for three weeks.

Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect. He is described as a white man in his 30s, around six feet tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a white toque with a white hooded sweatshirt and had stubble.

Police also released a photo of a "distinctive" Porsche Macan car that could be connected to the incident. The VPD said they haven't linked the car to the alleged luring, but believe the person driving it might be able to assist them in their investigation.
