How the show is a boon for local designers

Every major city has a fashion week and Vancouver is no exception, says Jamal Abdourahman, the producer of Vancouver Fashion Week.

Now in its 15thyear, the week-long celebration of this city's style will feature 30 designers from 30 different countries.

But it is also an opportunity for local Vancouver designers to showcase their art to a global audience.

Three of those designers include Shelly Klassen of Blushing Boutique, Allison Wonderland, and Alex S. Yu.

Shelly Klassen works in her studio on Richards Street and makes a lot of dresses, both for the working women and for the night out.

Allison Smith graduated from Kwantlen University and now sells her clothes all across Canada with her label Allison Wonderland.

Alex S. Yu graduated from the London College of Arts and is from White Rock. He goes bold with foot ware and fabric and is especially popular in Taiwan. The outfit he brought for CBC audiences to see was inspired by George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

"Comfort and unique that is Vancouver" says Abdourahaman, describing Yu's work.

In the video above, host Gloria Macarenko gets a preview ofsome of the designs on display at the upcoming Fashion Week.
