Vancouver street food vendors picked

Officials say many of the food carts and trucks are already operational, so once they're checked over by health officials, they should be ready to hit the streets in a couple of weeks.

Pedestrians in Vancouver will soon be able to grab some Chinese dim sum, Korean meat and veggies, tex-mex burritos, Southern Barbeque or New York style stone-baked pizza as they stroll the city's streets.

On Friday, the city announced the winners of its street food vendor lottery, picking the names of just 17 winners from a barrel full of 800 applications.

Officials say many of the food carts and trucks are already operational, so once they're checked over by health officials, they should be ready to hit the streets in a couple of weeks.

But the licenses come at a steep price $40,000 for the right to occupy designated parking spots located around the streets of the downtown core.

Dozens of applicants packed into a city meeting room on Friday morning for the draw.

Frank Moora, who operatesa stone-baked pizza operation out of a converted truck, was ecstatic when his application was picked.

"I wasn't expecting it just waiting. And I saw all the people and then when they called my name, I was pretty shocked," said Moora.

"Everybody thinks I'm crazy, every single one of them. It's something I always liked. I saw it in New York once and I thought it would be something cool for Vancouver and I told my wife on our honeymoon and she said, 'Ok, give it a shot,'" said Moora.

Despite getting picked, Moora says his dream of opening a mobile pizza joint has not gone exactly as planned.

"Yes, very expensive. We started with a budget and I've gone three times over it already, and my wife, she's pretty mad at me, so hopefully tonight, I'm not sleeping on the couch," he said.
