Homicide team investigating shooting at University Golf Course near UBC

Homicide investigators were on the scene of a fatal shooting at the University Golf Club near UBC's Vancouver campus on Monday.

Emergency crews also investigating burning vehicle in nearby neighbourhood

UPDATE Oct. 18, 2022: Policehave identifiedthe victim shot Monday as Vishal Walia, 38. A statement said investigators believe his death was a targeted hit connectedto the Lower Mainland gang conflict.

Homicide investigators have responded to a deadlyshooting at the University Golf Club near UBC's Vancouver campus on Monday.

At least six RCMP cruisers responded around mid-morning tothe parking lot of the public golf courseadjacent to Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

A body in the parking lot was covered by a white blanket.

Sgt. Timothy Pierottiwith the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT)said the teamresponded to shots fired Monday and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds who later died.

Alsoon Monday, emergency crews responded to a burning vehicle in the nearby Dunbarneighbourhood. The vehicle was found on fire in an alley near Crown Street and 22ndAvenue, less than five kilometresfrom the golf course.

A burning car was found in an alley near Crown Street and 22nd Avenue in Vancouver on Oct. 17, 2022. There was a shooting at the nearby University Golf Course that same morning.

Pierotti saidany time a vehicle is on fire in proximity to a recent shooting, they'll investigate a possible link, but he says no connection has yet been established.

Richmond RCMP issued a statement Monday saying they were investigating a three-vehicle crash on Highway 91 linked to a suspicious fire in Vancouver, but they wouldn't say whether it's the same fire.

Mounties saidthe collision involved a police cruiser, a commercial vehicle and a vehicle with three suspects inside, who are now being held for investigation.

The golf course has been closed while police investigate.
