Woman was murdered, say police

The RCMP say an autopsy shows that a woman found dead near Mission on Sunday was murdered, but they won't say whether the body is that of a missing student from China.

The RCMP say an autopsy shows that a woman found dead near Mission on Sunday was murdered, but they won't say whether the body is that of a missing student from China.

Twenty-one-year-old Wei Amanda Zhao disappeared in Burnaby nearly two weeks ago. She was reported missing by her boyfriend, Ang Li, when she failed to return from a trip to a nearby grocery store.

The unidentified body was found on Sunday by hikers in a recreational area near Stave Lake that has become a popular dumping ground for stolen cars.

Mission RCMP won't say whether there are any suspects in the case, but they do say their investigation involves other areas of the Lower Mainland.

Because of the stolen car problem, a security guard is posted on the road, recording licence plates of cars in the area. Police say those security records may help in the investigation.

The RCMP will not release the woman's name until her family members have been notified, a process they say could take a few days.
