Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this weekend

It's another busy week for arts and entertainment in Calgary. CBC's Susan Holzman is here with her festive picks.

The Nutcracker will be at the Jubilee Auditorium from Dec 17th to the 24th. Artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre thinks it's important to bring joy to our lives, especially with current world events.

It's another busy week for arts and entertainment in Calgary. TheCBC's Susan Holzmanlistsher festive picks.

1) Alberta Ballet's Nutcracker

Alberta Ballet presents the well-loved classic, featuring lavish sets and costumes and80 students who complement the company's dancers on stage. While the show is on tour, the children are picked from the community where it's being performed. The production runs from Dec.17-24 at the Jubilee Auditorium. Tickets start at $29 and are available through albertaballet.com.

2) Free skate with Santa

Skate with Santa is on at Olympic Plaza (11 a.m. to 3 p.m)on Saturday, Dec.19. Bring your own equipment or borrow skates and helmets on site. Forthose who may need a little help,Wild Rose Skating Club will be on hand to give skating tipsand entertain with a few skating performances. The event is free and open to people of all ages.

3) Get a selfie with Santa

If you haven't quite finished your Christmas shoppingor, like me,you haven't even started,there's a way to combine the things you need to get done with some festive cheer:Christmas in Kensington is on from noon to 4 p.m. this weekend. Enjoy free hot chocolate or coffee at the tent in front of the Plaza,go on a horse-drawnwagon ride, listen to some rock 'n' roll carolers, visit the petting zoo and get a selfie with Santa!

4) A night at the theatre

A Christmas Carol continues its run at Theatre Calgary. After a successful holiday show last year,ForteMusical Theatre Guild presents its Naughty but Nice show again this year. For those who went last year, it will be a different show this year.Naughty but Nice runs until Dec. 20 at Lunchbox Theatre. For tickets go to lunchboxtheatre.com

5) Put on your dancing shoes

Delhi 2 Dublin are playing this weekend at the fifthannual winter solstice. The show is being performed at Civic on 3rd, which is in Chinatown on ThirdAvenue and FirstStreet S.E.. It's a stunning venuewith plenty of room to dance.
