AHS orders review of 31 pathology tests

Alberta Health services has ordered a review of the handling of more than two dozen pathology tests done at Calgary's Rockyview Hospital.

Alberta Health services has ordered a review of the handling of more than two dozen pathology tests done at Calgarys Rockyview Hospital.

The Health Quality Council of Alberta is looking at 31 cases that Calgary Laboratory Services was responsible for from late December 2010 to early this year.

The review includes possible processing malfunctions and irregularities in biopsies and tissue specimens, officials said.

There is no evidence that any patient received incorrect therapy or that their treatment was unduly delayed, AHS said in a written release.

AHS has also asked the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta to conduct an inspection to re-confirm Calgary Laboratory Services is operating in accordance with approved standards.

Officials said nearly all of the patients affected have been contacted.

AHS believes no other Calgary patients are at risk of incorrect diagnoses.

The review is expected to be completed by July 2012.
