Airdrie RCMP investigate growing string of suspicious fires

Nine suspicious fires have occurred in and around Airdrie since Oct. 1 and the police are seeking the public's help.

Targets include under-construction townhouses, a barn and hay bales since Oct. 1

Airdrie RCMP are asking for the public's help as they investigate at least nine suspicious fires over the past two weeks which are becoming bigger and more frequent.

Police believe the first suspicious fire happened on Oct. 1 with a small fire at the Main Street Plaza parking lot. Since then the incidents have started to involve larger targets, including under-construction townhouses in the neighbourhood of Ravenswood, a barn and an unoccupied RV. The fires have occurred in urban and rural areas.

"Thankfully all these properties have been uninhabited, nobody has been injured, but it's still very concerning to us," said Cst. Jason Curtis with the Airdrie RCMP.

"Any time uncontrolled fires are involved there's obviously great risk for injury and death as well as property damage," Curtis said.

Besides asking for the public's help, Curtis said they are also seeking help from other Alberta investigators.

"Somebody out there has witnessed this or even seen something that they thinkmight be strange. We want people to call us and just give us any information they have or anything they might have seen that issuspicious in nature."
