Alleged Calgary fraudster caught in Ontario

A convicted con man wanted for defrauding a widow in Calgary has been arrested in Ontario and will be transferred to the city to face charges.

A convicted con man wanted for defrauding a widow in Calgary has been arrested in Ontario and will be transferredto the city to face charges.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued last week for Duncan James Ryan, 47, on charges of fraud over $5,000, theft and personation of a lawyer. He was also wanted for parole violations on similar convictions.

Calgary police said Friday thatpublic tips led authorities toDuncan in Ontario, where he was arrested by members of the Niagara Regional Police Service earlier this week.

Ryan is accused of bilking a widow in her late 50s out of more than $25,000,the bulk of her life savings, in less thana month. The victim's friend had met Ryan through an online dating site.

In 2002, Ryan, who worked as a paralegal, was sentenced in Newfoundland and Labrador to two years in prison for a series of fraudulent schemes involving his clients. They lost more than $160,000.
