Bader Amer, suspected gangster, gets 4-day jail sentence for assault

A suspected gangster was given the equivalent of a four-day jail sentence for hitting an elderly man in the face several times.

Bader Amer, 20, was charged with assault following a road rage incident last June. When police announced the charges they said it was in connection with an investigation into a shooting in the southeast community of Penbrook.

The Amer family is no stranger to the justice systemtwo brothers and a cousin all face charges police believe are tied to this city's gang war.

Bader's brother, 19-year-oldAbdul Amer, is charged with two counts of discharging a firearm with intent to injurein connection with ashooting in Decemberin the northeast community of Coral Springs.

His cousinTalal Amer is also charged in connection with a shooting in the city'ssoutheast in June andin connection with anear-fatal shooting in Januaryin the parking lot of a strip mall.

Bader Amerhas been in custody on other weapons and drug charges since November.

Back in June, Bader Amer's car crashed into another vehicle on Stoney Trail.

Upset his Mercedes had been damaged, Amer got out of his car and punched the 76-year-old in the face, breaking his glasses.

Organized crime Crown prosecutorJaniceRea had proposed an 11-week sentence for the assault, whichconcerned the elderly victim and his wife so muchthey've since installed a security system in their home.

"I think in cases of road rage, a period of incarceration is necessary," said Judge John Bascom."That's a sad thing that people don't feel safe in this city."

LawyerKatherin Beyak asked for a fine for her client who is in custodyawaiting trial on his other charges.
