Historic Banff hotel to get rooftop hot tubs in $45M renovation after December fire

A $45-million plan will combine modern amenities and historic charm to restore an iconic landmark in Banff after flames engulfed the 108-year-old structure in December.

A $45-million plan is in place to restore an iconic Banff landmark after flames engulfed the 108-year-old Mount Royal Hotellate last year.

The new concept for the hotel will create a rooftop patio with outdoor hot tubs and fire pits.

The building's facade will be restored, and historically inspired decor will adorn the interiors of a new museum and hotel library.

"We were inspired by the hotel's rich history and knew we had to incorporate it into the design," said David McKenna, president ofBrewsterTravel Canada by Pursuit in a release.

The hotel is expected to reopen in July 2018 and isaccepting summer reservations.

Located in the heart of Banff, the Mount Royal Hotel has been a longstandinganchor to the local community and a favourite among tourists.

Under the ownership of Dave and Annie McDougall, the Banff Hotel first opened in 1908 as a red brick structure with a turreted lead roof and room for 60 guests. (Banff historic museum)
