1 dead after truck and horse trailer collide with tow truck in southern Alberta

One person is dead and another in life-threatening condition after a crash between Brooks and Bassano on Highway 1.

One person is dead and another in life-threatening condition after a crash between Brooks and Bassano on Highway 1.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., a westbound truck towing a horse trailer collided with a tow truck that was stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights on to respond to another vehicle.

The 83-year-old driver of the truck from Olds, Alta., was pronounced dead at the scene.

An adult female passenger was airlifted by HALO air ambulance to Calgary hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The tow truck operators weren't hurt. The horse in the horse trailer also was not injured.

Brooks RCMP is investigatingbut no charges will be laid.

Roads were icy at the time, police said.

That section of the highway was closed for the investigationbut reopened around 6:30 p.m.
