Man dead after truck hits bus shelter, building in Calgary, police say

One person was killed Sunday morning after a vehicle drove through a bus shelter in southeast Calgary, police say.

A 42-year-old man was killed Sunday morning after a truck hit a bus shelter and building in southeast Calgary, police say.

Police are still trying to piece together many details about thefatal crash.

At 9:30 a.m., a truck was travelling northbound on 36 Street S.E.through the intersection at 17 Avenue S.E. in Forest Lawn.

Police believe the truck was driving on the sidewalk before ithita nearby building and bus shelter which killed a pedestrianwho was inside or near theshelter.

Despite best efforts from EMS, including CPR, the man died at the scene. He was not taken to hospital.

Sgt. Colin Foster, who heads the collision reconstruction unit for the Calgary police, said the speed limit in the area is 50 km/h, and the driver was going "well above that." Foster addedat this time it's too early to determine if alcohol or narcotics were a factor in the crash. He was also unable to confirm if the driver owned the vehicle.

The truck's driver a man was taken to hospital, as a precautionary measure, Foster said, and is believed to be the only one in the vehicle.

Police say the driver has been detained in police custody.

Mark Soliga, who lives near where the incident happened, woke up after his mom told him she heard a loud bang coming from the street.

He said there are a lot of collisions in the area, but this one is surprising, especially the aftermath.

"I would say the bus stop, it flew for a couple metres from its original place."

Roads wereclosed at the intersection and areexpected to remain closed for several hours while police are on-scene.

Foster said police are still working to determine the man's driving pattern prior to the collision.
