Some Calgarians are worried about the growth of the game of golf after the city announced it is going to sell McCall Lake Golf Course.

Earlier this week, the city cited in a news release that the sale is "due to significant operating and capital costs."

Now, some people are concerned about losing the 18-hole municipally-owned course at 32nd Street east of Deerfoot Trail.

"I actually started playing golf when I was seven and my dad was the first one to take me out on that course," said 16-year-old Sabrine Garrison, who regularly plays in golf tournaments.

Carter Grosart says one of the unique characteristics about McCall is that its a smaller, par-3 course.

"It's a good course for beginners and people that are just starting the game," Grosart says. "So I think it's going to be a hit to golf thats for sure."

But city courses are taking a hit on the city's budget, mainly because they are not being used enough.

"And particularly this particular golf course was really feeling that," says Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

When the McCall Lake closes in the fall of 2014, there will only be six city courses left with none in the northeast.
