Calgarians get royal taste test of Halifax's King of Donair

Calgarians, a lot of them, got to dive into a tasty Halifax treat as the King of Donair set up a pop-up shop Friday, to unofficially test the waters.

Calgarians, a lot of them, got to dive into a tasty Halifax treat as the King of Donair set up a pop-up shop Fridaya way to unofficially test the waters.

Halifax is the self-described birthplace of the donair, a meaty pita sandwich. The city even declared donairs the "official food of the city" in December.

Adam Wilkie took a day off work anddrove two hours from Crowsnest Pass to get a taste. He also waited for two more hours in line.

"They are not the same,"Wilkie said oflocal donairs.

"You can't get them anywhere else, you can only get them back east or from an outfit like this that is from back east."

Hundreds lined upatMerakiSupply Co. inHillhurstFriday afternoon, but if that dose of meat and sauce wasn't enough, the King will have another pop-up shop on Saturday at Sunshine Village.
