Alberta Environment says wildfires in southeast B.C. have pushed the air quality risk to 'moderate' for areas around Calgary.

That could affect some people with certain health conditions.

Ogho Ikhalo with Alberta Environment says their system indicates things will likely get worse.

"The smoke is expected to pick up in the next 48 hours before [air quality] readings return to low level risk, which is around the more normal risk that Albertans are used to and have come to expect."

Ikhalo says they're monitoring air quality 24/7 and share that information with Alberta Health and Wellness, who is responsible for determining if an air quality health advisory is needed.

"We are also encouraging affected resident to take the appropriate precautions for their health and, again, to monitor the situation."

Ikhalo says you can check theprovince's websitefor updates on air quality.
