Calgary police have arrested an unspecified number of people inwhat they called a targeted shooting in the southeast community of Douglasdale late last year.

In a Tuesday release, the Calgary Police Service saidsuspects are in custody in relation to the killing ofAshley Aaron CuthbertMawdsley, 40,on Dec. 15. Police did not say how many were in custody as the investigation is ongoing.

They have also made arrests ina shooting last August a non-fatal shooting inthe underground parking lot of the Real Canadian Superstore in East Village.

Police saiddetectives identified the individuals responsible for each incident as having connections to organized crime.

"Despite both shootings being targeted, these offenders demonstrated a complete disregard for public safety and placed members of our community at risk of serious harm or death," said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta with the CPS homicide unit in a statement.

"Both of these shootings occurred at times when people were going about their daily routines. The victimization of Calgarians caused by organized crime violence can have a devastating and lasting impact on innocent bystanders and the community as a whole."

Police have not identified the suspects and said they will name them when formal charges are laid.
